Welcome

Hugh Massey Architects was formed in 1993 to continue the character and quality of work that has been undertaken by Hugh Massey as Director of Project Office Architects in the School of Architecture in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne Barrow Park

Hugh Massey has been the principal of the practice from inception and has gathered a small full time team along with a multi disciplinary associates team.

The practice converted a former fish and chip shop in South Moor Stanley into its main office and has initiated the 'Architect's Shop' concept, which aims to make accessible professional services to the local area. A new branch office is shortly to be opened in the major refurbishment project, Victoria Hall in Barrow in Fumess, Cumbria.

As well as projects from the Tweed to the Humber Hugh Massey has worked in Cumbria for nearly 20 years and over the last decade work in the Fumess peninsula has grown substantially. As well as being Architects the practice has planning and landscape expertise and this has featured in another major Barrow project, the restoration of the Mawson design on Barrow Public Park. This project has undertaken working with Owen Williams Consultants, Landscape Design Associates and Davis Langdon.

Conservation , restoration and refurbishment of old buildings has been a major preoccupation for the practice starting from Hugh's very early involvement in practical historic building restoration at the Folly , Settle in the late 1960's.
